Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) has a long and proud history of serving the people of Lafayette. We are your next-door neighbors, and we care about the same things you do: reasonable utilities rates and reliable, quality services that protect our families and strengthen our community. As a customer-owned company, we provide electric, water, and wastewater services that reflect the needs and priorities of our community.

History, Leadership, Culture

From our beginnings to today, LUS has grown into a trusted part of Lafayette. With a culture of safety, reliability, and service excellence, LUS employs over 460 people and is the largest department of the Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Founded in 1897 to meet the needs of a growing town, LUS has a long tradition of serving the community. Today, LUS continues to offer some of the lowest residential electric rates in Louisiana while supporting our community through significant contributions to the Consolidated Government to support other community needs.

Capital Improvement Projects

Current initiatives include:

  • Bonin Redevelopment Project: LUS is developing a new power plant and upgrading existing systems to secure Lafayette’s energy future. These improvements are designed to strengthen reliability and ensure that we have dependable electricity for years to come.

  • South Gravity Sewer Lift Station: LUS is improving our community’s infrastructure with a new sewer lift station to better serve 2,000 homes. This project will provide additional sewer capacity and support growth in downtown, midtown, and the surrounding areas, with construction beginning in late 2025.
