Water
LUS was created to meet the needs of a growing Lafayette. Early city leaders initiated a campaign to have their own utilities and, in 1896, Lafayette voters unanimously supported the funding for a municipal water and electrical plant. Since then, LUS has successfully navigated the changing demands to effectively respond to Lafayette’s rapid growth and needs for clean, reliable water. Check out our YouTube channel to learn more about our water operations.
For 125 years, LUS has remained Lafayette’s citizen-owned public power utility.
Since 1897, Lafayette Utilities System has expanded water facilities to support Lafayette’s increasing water needs. LUS maintains four water production facilities and more than 900 miles of water distribution pipe to produce a daily average of 23 million gallons of clean water.
Water quality is important to us! LUS goes above and beyond EPA regulations taking extra steps to ensure that the water delivered to Lafayette from the Chicot Aquifer is safe, good tasting and meets our high quality standards.
