Lafayette Consolidated Government's Environmental Quality Division services are geared toward serving Lafayette's citizenry with services to reduce the amount of waste produced in Lafayette Parish. Benefits of this waste reduction include extending the life of expensive but necessary landfills, providing a nutrient-rich soil amendment for residents, and improving the overall quality of life in Lafayette Parish. Because of LCG's composting program, waste has been reduced by 30%. In addition, through all the services of the Environmental Quality Division, the amount of waste produced in Lafayette Parish was reduced by 46% in 2004.
LUS and its tree-trimming contractor, Asplundh, are partners with the LCG Environmental Quality Division Compost Facility for disposal of its tree-trimming debris.
LUS customers can do their part by leaving yard waste at their curbside on their appropriate day, once a week for BFI to pick up. Only tree wood, grass, weeds, leaves, and shrub clippings are accepted at the Compost Facility. No treated or processed wood is acceptable. For large piles of yard waste, please notify BFI at 232-5730 to coordinate collection.
Yard maintenance contractors and citizens may drop-off yard waste at the Compost Facility. There is a charge to drop-off of $6.00 per cubic yard (a cubic yard is the equivalent of a half-ton pick-up truck bed full of yard waste). Yard waste drop-off times are Monday-Friday 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Saturday 7 a.m. until noon.
Free compost is available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until noon at the Dean Domingues Compost Facility, located at 400 Dugas Road. Machinery is available to load pickup trucks and trailers. Any vehicle with an enclosed back will require citizens to manually load, with a shovel, the desired quantity of compost into their vehicle themselves.
