| About The Initiative |
Does Lafayette already have Fiber-to-the-Home?
No home in Lafayette has access to a direct fiber optic connection.
How do I find more information about the LUS Fiber-to-the-Home Initiative?
Continue browsing the Fiber For The Future website, watch our live call-in talk show on AOC (Cable Channel 5) at 5:30 pm on Monday evenings, and attend an upcoming town hall meeting.
How will Lafayette benefit from the LUS fiber to the home plan?
Stronger economy: Fiber will attract new businesses and strengthen existing ones.
Improved Education: Fiber will allow classrooms to interact audibly and visually with national and international lectures and demonstrations.
Cost Savings: An average of 20%.
How will the LUS fiber to the home (FTTH) project benefit the Lafayette consumer?
All of Lafayette’s residents and businesses will see more affordable prices (an average of 20% savings), better service quality and more competitive product offerings.
Isn't this just a duplication of telephone, cable TV, and Internet services?
No. While on the surface the services may appear the same, fiber optics directly to the home and business (FTTH) is far superior than what is provided in our community today. A FTTH network distributes the tremendous capacity and signal superiority of light to provide you with expanded service options and much greater bandwidth capacity. A fiber optics network to homes and businesses will provide Lafayette with the most progressive technology available at lower prices, making current and future technology more affordable and accessible to the entire community.
What is the LUS Fiber-to-the-Home Initiative?
LUS proposes to bring fiber optics to every home and business in Lafayette in order to deliver cable TV, telephone and Internet services at a cost of 20% less than the current providers. This is commonly referred to as a triple play of services.
Why can’t the City spend this money on other priorities such as drainage and roads?
The money to be borrowed for this fiber initiative is only available because the project can generate new revenues (which drainage, roads, etc., cannot).
Will Lafayette residents have the opportunity to vote on the LUS Fiber-to-the-Home Initiative?
Yes. An election will be held on Saturday, July 16th. Visit the Election Information page of this website for details.
Will LUS increase taxes to fund this project?
No. LUS does not use any tax dollars to operate the existing utilities business and will not use tax dollars to operate the fiber project.
Will this increase customer utility bills?
No. The electric, water and sewer systems are separate entities. Revenues from the fiber optic services would recover the cost of operations and loan repayments.
