Definitions

BANDWIDTH - A measurement of the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network at any given time. The higher the network’s bandwidth, the greater the volume of data that can be transmitted.

BROADBAND - A general term for different types of high-speed, high-bandwidth connections to the Internet, including DSL, cable and Fiber to the Home.

CABLE MODEM - A device that connects your computer to the Internet using the cable TV line.

DIAL-UP - A connection using a modem and a standard telephone line to connect to the Internet.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE – Bundles of hair-thin glass filaments through which light can travel. Fiber offers greater transmission capacity with less interference than metal cables. It has the ability to transmit large amounts of information at the speed of light over much longer distances.

FIBER TO THE CURB (FTTC) - Refers to fiber optic cabling installed to the curbs or a central point in an entire neighborhood, typically serving several customers.
FIBER TO THE HOME (FTTH) - A network in which high-capacity fiber optic cabling is brought to each house allowing large amounts of data to be transmitted. This also reduces the bottleneck effect that may occur with Fiber to the Curb.

STREAMING – A technique that allows sound and/or video files to be heard and seen while downloading. Without streaming, the entire file must finish downloading before the sound or video can be played.

VIDEO ON DEMAND - A pay-per-view television service in which a viewer can order a program from a menu and have it delivered instantly to the television set, typically with
